Comment: School Transformation and Empowerment Partnerships (STEP) EC

The 2023 MBSA STEP cohort of learners performed exceptionally well with an average pass rate of 83,26 from 75,71% which is a remarkable 7,1% improvement! Sakhikamva marked a major leap from a disappointing 59,3% to 81,3% which is a resounding 22% increase. Wongalethu and Uviwe also increased from 70,8% to 80,2% and 79,8% to 85,9% which is a 9,4% and 6,1% improvement respectively. John Bisseker is also making steady progress by an improvement from 63,3% to 69,9% which marks a 6,6% increase. It is of paramount importance to note that this cohort of learners overcame appalling conditions such as loss of learning time from Covid 19 to the increased load shedding schedules the country has succumbed to.

Funda Afrika with the immense support from MBSA, ensured that despite the adverse conditions against this cohort of learners stemming from loss of learning time in grade 10 to 11; adequate content gap interventions are implemented along the course of the year.

The MBSA STEP 1 Eastern Cape and STEP 2 Gauteng projects are still recovering from the effects of Covid – 19 which dampened operations to the system since the onset of the pandemic almost two years ago. Partnerships such as the MBSA STEP Programme have enhanced resilience among the school communities by providing uninterrupted services to the learners and also through whole school support via our developmental sessions for the educators in the supported target subjects Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting became more learner-centred from the Department of Education and Funda Afrika.
