The Gauteng MBSA Tshwane STEP project schools improved by 6.19% in their performances from 77.01% to 83.2% in the overall pass percentage of the programme group. The 2022 cohort performance is 1.1% less than the provincial pass rate of 84.4%. This group of learners succumbed to the aftereffects of covid 19 but managed to achieve a pass rate of 80.1% from 76.4%, an increase of 3.7% in the National Grade 12 Results. The group was very resilient since most learners had never sat for formal exams as provinces had to bear with localised setting and marking of exams countering the Covid-19 measures while not compromising the quality of teaching and learning. We commend all the students’ and schools’ efforts to return to the incrementing levels in performances after overcoming rotational timetabling and losing some schooling days at one point or another.
Tshwane South, in which six of our eight MBSA STEP supported schools fall under, once more in 2022, is second in province and in the top 10 at number 4 in the country with 89.0%, while our performance stands at 83.2%, this is 5.8% below the district. The remaining two schools in Tshwane West which had achieved 82.8% in 2021, decreased to 82%, a drop of 0.8%.
Funda Afrika for the academic year of 2023, intends to engage and meet the District Officials and all stakeholders to formulate intervention plans for schools that did not meet the performance expectations. Educators and learners will be given the crucial support in overcoming challenges that affected intervention activities to limit underachieving schools from similar outcomes at the end of the year. The year 2022 was characterised by catchup teaching and learning to gain momentum on lost ground and time.
