Exxaro LDP
Starting from a very low base, a general trend towards steady improvement can be ascertained from the above. In all cases, except in the Grade 12 2014 results where the LDP group and the whole school group were the same learners, the LDP Group has performed better. If the 2014 Grade 10 and 11 learners are to get the opportunity to attend an LDP project in 2015, there is little doubt that results will show greater improvement, given that these learners are now used to exposure to expert facilitators and the expectations which they will be able to meet, based on their 2014 experience.

The LDP and AMC programmes funded by Exxaro Grootegeluk were delivered in 2014, over 25 school holiday days in the period 31 March to 11 October (LDP) and six Saturdays in the period 19 August to 25 October (AMC), as follows.Project Breakdown
Learner Development Programme (LDP)
Programme Components and Goals: Enriched revision and tuition sessions in Mathematics, Physical Science and English, to deliver improved pass rates and increased numbers of high quality results; career guidance sessions over three sessions, leading learners through self-analysis to enhanced insights about genuine interests and strengths, and, flowing therefrom, exposure to suitable career fields and specific potential careers.
Target Area: Lephalale Circuit in the Waterberg District of the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE)
LDP Targeted Beneficiaries: 300 selected Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners
Participating Schools: Mabalane Seleka Technical School (host school), Phegelelo Secondary School, Tielelo Secondary School and Ellisras High School.
Accelerated Mentoring and Coaching Programme (AMC)
The AMC programme was aimed at a total of 10 ‘high potential’ LDP learners from each of the three grades, with the expectation of high performance results from the selected participants. In addition to the tuition sessions, facilitators interacted with the AMC learners by electronic means (cell phones) with sets of tasks which learners completed and sent back for marking and facilitators’ comments.
Project Implementation
Delivery Agents
Project Management: Delivered by Fundani Ma Africa trading as Funda Afrika, supported by local project champion Zacke Radibape (principal: Tielelo Secondary), with highly efficient and generous administrative support from management and administration of the host school Mabalane Seleka. In addition, Mr Daniel Madibana from Grootegeluk was responsible for learner transport arrangements and assisted in interactions with the appointed caterers. The then L DoE Circuit Manager Joseph Bobape visited the project regularly to encourage and motivate the learners, and engage with project managers and facilitators over lunch.

Programme Progress
Funda Afrika maintained a presence at Mabalane Seleka Technical School on all session days, in the persons of either manager Randy Mbuso or CEO Helmut (Mkhulu) Bertelsmann. Generally, all the logistic arrangements (transport, catering, printing etc) were in place and the programme was implemented as planned.
Learner Attendance
Attendance figures generally fluctuated between 261 and 271, at their highest at 311 on one programme day in October. Learner numbers were consistently at their lowest on Saturdays.
Lower numbers than planned were largely due to irregular attendance from Ellisras H S learners, as the school’s own holiday intervention occasionally overlapped with the LDP/AMC sessions.
Note that Ellisras learners have been excluded from the results analysis below, even though many of them were high level performers. However, their inclusion would not make analytical or statistical sense, in the light of the above.
Of concern is that attendance fluctuated in terms of individual participation, which again impacts on statistical accuracy.
Programme Results
The analysis below measures the programme learners’ results in terms of subject-specific performance by end of year results comparison between November 2013 and November 2014, per grade, compared to the overall results of all learners enrolled in the relevant subject in the three/two schools (the ‘control’ group).
This should give an overall impression of the effectiveness or otherwise of the LDP.
Note that Mabalane Seleka only has its first Grade 12 class this year (2015).
